In Loving Memory of Mariah Mayfield, 18

With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, we pause to honor the life of Mariah Mayfield, just 18 years old, whose life was tragically cut short in a devastating crash on Wednesday afternoon in Coos County, Oregon.

According to the Oregon State Police, the fatal incident occurred on April 15, 2026, at approximately 2:48 p.m. along Highway 101 near milepost 260. What began as an ordinary day quickly turned into an unimaginable tragedy that would forever impact families, friends, and an entire community.

Preliminary reports indicate that a white Mercedes E400, driven by 78-year-old Bernard Cooley of Bandon, was traveling northbound in the southbound lane—placing countless lives at risk. The vehicle narrowly avoided colliding with a Bandon Police patrol car and another passenger vehicle. Recognizing the immediate danger, the officer activated emergency lights and attempted to intercept the wrong-way driver.

Moments later, as the patrol car worked to catch up, the Mercedes struck a guardrail before veering back into the southbound lane—directly into the path of Mariah’s blue Mazda Mazda3. The collision was head-on and catastrophic.

Mariah Mayfield was pronounced deceased at the scene.

She was just beginning her journey in life—a young woman filled with promise, dreams, and a future that stretched far beyond the horizon. At only 18 years old, Mariah represented hope, energy, and the beauty of youth. To those who knew her, she was more than a name in a report—she was a daughter, a friend, a light in the lives of many.

While Bernard Cooley survived the crash with minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital, the loss of Mariah leaves a void that cannot be measured. No words can fully capture the grief carried by her loved ones or the heartbreak felt by a community shaken by such a sudden loss.

The highway remained closed for approximately three hours as first responders worked tirelessly at the scene. Oregon State Police were assisted by the Bandon Police Department, Coos County Sheriff’s Office, Bandon Fire Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation—each playing a role in responding to this tragic event with professionalism and care.

As the investigation continues into the cause of the crash, we are reminded of the fragility of life and how quickly everything can change in an instant.

Today, we remember Mariah Mayfield not for how she died, but for the life she lived—however brief. We remember her smile, her spirit, and the love she gave so freely. Though her time here was short, her impact will never fade from the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

To her family and friends, we extend our deepest condolences. May you find strength in one another, comfort in cherished memories, and peace in knowing that Mariah’s life, though brief, mattered deeply.

Rest in peace, Mariah Mayfield. You will never be forgotten.
