In Loving Memory of Salvador Garcia-Barrera and Ronald L. Engel

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ala. — A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Saturday morning, claiming the lives of two men whose sudden passing has left their families, friends, and communities in mourning. Authorities have identified the victims as 36-year-old Salvador Garcia-Barrera of Montgomery and 67-year-old Ronald L. Engel of Notasulga.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the fatal crash occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. along Interstate 85 near the Mitylene area, just before Exit 11 leading to Chantilly Parkway. What began as an ordinary morning quickly turned devastating when the two vehicles collided head-on in a violent impact that ended both men’s lives at the scene.

Investigators say Salvador Garcia-Barrera was driving a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder when his vehicle collided with a 2018 Ford F-150 driven by Ronald L. Engel. The force of the crash was catastrophic, leaving little chance for survival. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but despite their efforts, both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

The southbound lanes of I-85 were shut down for several hours as first responders worked diligently to secure the area, assist with the investigation, and clear the wreckage. Traffic was diverted while authorities conducted a thorough examination of the crash site. The roadway was eventually reopened around 8:30 a.m., but the emotional weight of the incident continues to linger far beyond the physical scene.

As ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division continues its investigation into what led to the collision, many questions remain unanswered. Officials have not yet released details regarding contributing factors, and the cause of the crash remains under active investigation.

Today, we pause to remember two lives lost too soon. Salvador Garcia-Barrera, a Montgomery resident, is remembered by those who knew him as a hardworking individual whose presence brought warmth to those around him. Ronald L. Engel, of Notasulga, lived a long life filled with experiences, relationships, and memories cherished by his loved ones.

Though their journeys ended tragically on that quiet stretch of interstate, their lives mattered deeply to those who knew and loved them. The loss is profound—not only for their families but for the communities they were part of.

As friends and loved ones grieve, may they find strength in shared memories and comfort in the support of those around them. In moments like these, we are reminded of how fragile life can be and how important it is to hold our loved ones close.

Rest in peace, Salvador Garcia-Barrera and Ronald L. Engel. Your lives will not be forgotten.
