EL PASO, Texas — A tragic crash in Northwest El Paso has left one man dead and a young woman facing serious charges, as authorities say 19-year-old Ambar Chavaria was involved in a collision that claimed the life of 56-year-old Jaime Humbero Andrade earlier this week.
According to reports, the crash occurred Monday night, April 6, along the 6300 block of North Desert Boulevard. Investigators say Chavaria rear-ended another vehicle, setting off a chain of events that ultimately resulted in fatal injuries to Andrade.
Court documents reveal that the incident was part of a larger four-vehicle crash that unfolded around 9:17 p.m. Witnesses described a chaotic and rapidly developing scene. One man who had exited his vehicle to check on others involved said he observed multiple cars stopped, including a red car, a dark-colored vehicle, and a Subaru Outback.
As he climbed onto the center cement barrier and began walking back toward the vehicles, he noticed another man sitting on the barrier who appeared disoriented. Moments later, everything changed.
The witness reported hearing a sudden and forceful impact. Turning back, he saw that the Subaru had been violently rear-ended by a BMW, later identified as the vehicle driven by Chavaria.
Good Samaritans immediately rushed to help. When they reached the Subaru, they found Andrade slumped over toward the passenger side. After opening the door, they heard him say he could not feel anything. The men carefully removed him from the vehicle and attempted to assist him as best they could while waiting for emergency responders.
During this time, witnesses reported hearing Chavaria yelling before she ultimately fled the scene. Despite the efforts of those who stayed behind to help, Andrade was transported to University Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
The situation took another turn shortly after 10 p.m., when Chavaria’s mother contacted police to report that her daughter had been involved in the crash and had fled. According to documents, she told officers that her daughter was refusing to return to the scene or go to a police station, providing authorities with her name and address.
Police later responded to a residence on Rose Gandara, where they located both Chavaria and her mother. Officers noted that Chavaria showed visible signs of intoxication, prompting the involvement of the El Paso Police Department’s DWI Task Force.
When questioned, Chavaria reportedly told officers that she had been drinking earlier in the evening at a bar with a man she described as her “Sugar Daddy.” She admitted to consuming four alcoholic drinks prior to the crash.
Chavaria was arrested and charged with collision involving death. According to El Paso County court records, she later posted bail the same day on a $100,000 surety bond.
The tragic loss of Jaime Humbero Andrade has left family members and loved ones grieving, as the case continues to move forward through the legal system. Authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and the devastating consequences it can have—not only for those behind the wheel, but for innocent lives caught in its path.
