KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — A tragic hit-and-run incident early Thursday morning has left Brandon James Butler, 29, of Elgin, dead, according to Kershaw County Coroner David West, as authorities work to identify and locate the driver responsible.
Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 1:26 a.m. reporting a man lying on the side of the roadway in the 1200 block of Wildwood Lane, near the intersection with Chestnut Road. When first responders arrived, they discovered Butler unresponsive with fatal injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
Preliminary findings indicate that Butler had been traveling along Wildwood Lane toward the town of Elgin when he was hit. Authorities believe the driver involved in the collision fled the scene immediately after the impact, leaving Butler behind without rendering aid.
Despite emergency response efforts, Brandon James Butler was pronounced dead at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under active investigation. Officials have not yet released a description of the suspect vehicle, and it remains unclear what factors may have contributed to the incident.
The case is being jointly investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) and the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office. Investigators are working to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision and are urging the public to come forward with any information that may assist in identifying the driver.
