Four Killed in Pike County Single-Vehicle Crash While Driver Attempts to Elude State Trooper

PIKE COUNTY, AL — A tragic single-vehicle crash claimed the lives of Tykevious D. Russaw, 27, of Eufaula; Robert D. Hall, 27, of Clayton; Quamay R. Richardson, 24, also of Clayton; and a 17-year-old male whose identity is being withheld, as he was a juvenile. The victims were involved in a fatal crash late Friday night while the driver, Russaw, was attempting to elude an Alabama state trooper.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:57 p.m. Friday on Pike County 6628, near its intersection with Pike County 6627, about nine miles east of Banks, Alabama. According to officials, Russaw was behind the wheel of a Hyundai Elantra when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and crash into a tree. The other victims were passengers in the vehicle.

ALEA Capt. Jeremy Burkett confirmed that Russaw, Hall, and the 17-year-old were all ejected from the vehicle upon impact. Tragically, they were pronounced dead at the scene. It was reported that none of these individuals were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Richardson, although not ejected from the vehicle, also sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Capt. Burkett disclosed that Russaw had been trying to elude a state trooper just before the crash occurred. The trooper had reportedly attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Russaw’s vehicle, but the pursuit ended when Russaw lost control while driving at high speed in an effort to escape law enforcement.

The incident has left the small community in Pike County grieving the loss of four young lives, three of whom were in the prime of their lives. The identities of the victims were officially released by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) on Saturday, but the name of the juvenile victim has not been made public in accordance with state laws regarding minors.

In addition to the immediate sorrow of the victims’ families, the crash serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of attempting to elude law enforcement. Alabama State Troopers and the ALEA continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the events leading up to the pursuit and the high-speed nature of the driver’s actions.

This incident underscores the importance of seat belt use, as the lack of seat belts was a critical factor contributing to the fatalities. Authorities urge all motorists, particularly those involved in high-risk driving situations, to remain cautious and follow traffic laws to help prevent such devastating accidents in the future.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency continues to investigate the crash, and further updates will be provided as the details become available.
