In Loving Memory of Callan Perez: Father and Son Die in Tragic Elko Regional Airport Shooting

A devastating incident at the Elko Regional Airport in Elko, Nevada has left a community in shock and mourning following a tragic homicide investigation that claimed the lives of 11-year-old Callan Perez and his father, 37-year-old Giovanni Perez, on April 13, 2026.

According to the Elko Police Department, officers responded at approximately 12:38 p.m. to reports of an active shooter at the airport. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male, identified as Giovanni Perez, deceased near the airline ticket counter. Bystanders then directed officers to a restroom area inside the terminal, where they discovered a juvenile male, identified as Callan Perez, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Emergency personnel immediately responded and began life-saving efforts on Callan Perez. He was transported by Fire and EMS to Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Despite all efforts, Callan tragically succumbed to his injuries.

During the initial investigation led by the Elko Police Department Detective Division, it was determined that Giovanni Perez and Callan Perez, father and son, had been traveling together prior to the incident. Their rental vehicle had broken down outside Winnemucca, Nevada, and the pair was later transported to Elko after the vehicle was towed, with plans to obtain a replacement rental vehicle.

Investigators report that both Giovanni and Callan initially entered a restroom inside the airport and exited shortly afterward. However, they re-entered the restroom together a second time, where it is believed Giovanni Perez fatally shot his son Callan Perez for reasons that remain unknown at this time. After the shooting, Giovanni Perez exited the restroom and took his own life near the airport ticket counter.

Due to the nature of the incident and limited initial information, the Elko Police Department requested assistance from the Elko Bomb Squad to thoroughly search and clear the vehicle involved as a precaution. No explosive devices were found.

The incident caused significant disruption to airport operations, impacting both inbound and outbound flights. Officials confirmed that the Elko Regional Airport is expected to resume normal operations in the afternoon of April 14, 2026.

Authorities continue to investigate all aspects of this tragic case. At this time, no clear motive has been determined.

The Elko Police Department expressed its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Callan Perez, stating that no family should ever endure such an unimaginable loss. Officials also extended sympathy to all those affected by the incident within the community and airport.

In light of this tragedy, authorities are urging anyone experiencing emotional distress or mental health struggles to seek help. Support is available through mental health professionals and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which provides confidential assistance 24 hours a day.

As the investigation continues, the community is left grieving a profound loss, remembering young Callan Perez and seeking understanding in the wake of an unthinkable tragedy.
