In Loving Memory:Noah Welch and James Rutherford Jr. Remembered After Tragic Colorado River Boating Accident Near Lake Havasu

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we honor and remember Noah Welch, 33, and James Rutherford Jr., 53, both of California, who tragically lost their lives in a boating accident on the Colorado River near Topock Gorge, north of Lake Havasu. Their sudden passing has left families, friends, and all who knew them grieving an unimaginable loss.

On Tuesday, April 7, at approximately 4:50 p.m., the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Division of Boating Safety responded to reports of a boating collision in the area. Upon arrival near the California shoreline, deputies discovered a heavily damaged watercraft as emergency crews were already on scene.

Fireboats from the San Bernardino County Fire Department and the Lake Havasu City Fire Department quickly began life-saving efforts, providing urgent medical aid to the two occupants of the vessel. Despite the rapid and dedicated response from first responders, one individual was pronounced deceased at the scene. The second was airlifted by medical helicopter to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Authorities later confirmed that the vessel involved was a 2002, 25-foot Daves Custom Boat traveling northbound on the Colorado River at a high rate of speed. For reasons still under investigation, the boat lost control, struck the rocky shoreline on the Arizona side of the river, and continued until coming to rest among reeds along the California shoreline.

The occupants of the vessel were identified as Noah Welch and James Rutherford Jr., both of California.

James Rutherford Jr. is lovingly remembered by those close to him, including his passion for boating and the vessel he proudly owned, known as “No Quarter.” Friends and loved ones recall meaningful moments shared on the water, filled with laughter, adventure, and unforgettable memories that will now be cherished forever.

Noah Welch and James Rutherford Jr. will be remembered not only for the tragic way their lives were lost, but for the lives they lived, the joy they brought to others, and the memories they leave behind. Their passing is a painful reminder of how fragile and precious life truly is.
