Olathe Man Critically Injured After Truck Crashes Into Cattle Field in Miami County; Four Animals Killed

MIAMI COUNTY, Kan. — A serious crash in Miami County on April 6, 2025, left 45-year-old Stephen Anthony Howard of Olathe critically injured and resulted in the deaths of four cattle after a pickup truck left the roadway and struck a fenced livestock area, authorities said.

Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 5:36 p.m. to the 231st Street corridor just east of Pflumm Road following reports of an injury crash. Responding units included Miami County EMS, Johnson County Fire District No. 1, and the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

When first responders arrived, they located a heavily damaged purple 1998 Ford Ranger that had come to rest inside a cattle lot north of the roadway. Authorities also discovered multiple cattle had been struck, with four animals confirmed dead at the scene due to the impact.

The driver of the vehicle, Stephen Anthony Howard, sustained critical injuries in the crash. He was treated at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for further emergency care. His current condition has not been publicly updated.

According to a preliminary investigation by authorities, Howard was traveling westbound on 231st Street when, for reasons still unknown, the vehicle left the roadway. Investigators say the truck struck a fence line, entered a cattle pasture, and continued into the field before colliding with multiple livestock animals and coming to a stop.

Officials confirmed that all four cattle involved in the collision died as a result of the crash. The incident caused significant damage both to the vehicle and the fenced agricultural property.

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit (THU), which investigates all serious injury and fatal crashes in the county, responded to the scene and has taken over the investigation. Deputies continue to examine the circumstances that led to the vehicle leaving the roadway, including possible contributing factors.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding speed, mechanical issues, or impairment as the investigation remains active.

The crash remains under investigation by the Miami County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit, and officials say more information may be released as the case develops.
